We Are Men

We Are Men

The CBS comedy We Are Men aired in the fall of 2013. A coming-of-age buddy comedy created by Rob Greenberg, the show starred Christopher Nicholas Smith as Carter Thomas, a young man whose life is turned upside-down when his bride abandons him at the altar on their wedding day. In the aftermath of this traumatic event, he moves into a rental complex to transition into the next period of his life, little realizing just how much of an impact this short-term situation will have. You can watch We Are Men online to see what situation Carter has gotten himself into now.

We Are Men As Buddy Comedy

The basic idea behind this show is a young, naive character living amidst three older men who show him the ways of the world. Carter is an ordinary, likable guy who just wants to live a good life, but he has very innocent ideas about romance. Moving to the rental complex puts him in direct proximity to Gil Bartis (Kal Penn), Stuart Strickland (Jerry O’Connell) and Frank Russo (Tony Shalhoub). These three have a lot of varied experiences with women, and they are prepared to share what they know with Carter as he attempts to move on with his life after his devastating heartbreak. While Carter is not about to completely change his personality and ideals on their account, he is eager to take in the wisdom they have to offer on how to avoid the tricks women play to make men miserable.

The Characters

The main character is Carter, who is a sweet young man with deep emotions and a pressing desire to share his life with a woman he loves. His disastrous wedding has scarred him, but he is not willing to give up on his dreams. He is, however, more open to pursuing them through unconventional means, and that is just where his new friends come in.

Frank has had a lot of experience in the marriage department, having married and divorced four times. Now he lives a rather solitary life as a clothing manufacturer, but he still would like to think that he has a knack for putting the moves on the ladies. In addition, he doesn’t mind sharing his secrets with Carter. One thing he might not be so willing to share is his daughter Jill, who is beautiful and charming and quickly catches Carter’s eye.

Also part of the group is Stuart, who is in the midst of a divorce from his second wife. Stuart is an accomplished OB/GYN who has a tendency to flaunt his body by wearing a speedo, though he is not interested in garnering any female attention until his second divorce is entirely finalized. Completing the little group is Gil, who was recently traumatized by having an affair that went very badly. This owner of a small business is quick to offer Carter a cautionary tale.

Watch We Are Men Online

While We Are Men garnered plenty of interest, particularly because of the presence of Penn, Shalhoub and O’Connell, it did not stay on the air long enough to get syndication or a DVD release. Hence, if you want to check it out, you need to watch We Are Men online. You can enjoy the comedy just long enough to dream up possibilities for future episodes that never had the chance to air. The fun of this show lies in the familiar faces in the cast and the sense of camaraderie that pervades each episode as they lounge around by the pool or the grill swapping stories. If you have a group of friends that you regularly hang out with, this show would be a great choice for a mini-marathon.

Episode Summaries

The pilot episode of We Are Men deals with Carter’s catastrophic wedding day, his arrival in the temporary housing complex and his introduction to the three men who will soon become his best friends. This episode is just about establishing the characters and their relationship to each other, as well as setting up the routines that will be commonplace for them as the show progresses. In the second episode, We Are Dognappers, Stuart is distressed when he learns that his soon-to-be-ex-wife Amy plans to keep his dog. He readily goes along with a plan that Frank concocts to break into her house and take the pooch, but once they get there, all of their plans go haywire. Meanwhile, Gil struggles with his disappointment that his daughter does not want to go camping with him, and Carter tries to get up the courage to ask Frank to date his daughter. Later episodes deal with Carter’s first one-night stand and learning to swim.

In conclusion, while We Are Men was a short-lived show, it offered many laughs and a pleasant sense of fraternal bonding, making it a show ideal for groups of men to watch together. It was an enjoyable vehicle for its four leads, and the ability to watch it online ensures that this little gem does not fall into oblivion just because it did not end up getting a full season.
