The Originals is a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, a popular television show. This story arc takes a more mature and less high school age approach than its predecessor. The series offers new perspectives on the most sinister characters from The Vampire Diaries, the Mikaelsons, while the plot gives them more room to grow without the overwhelming love triangle they had to compete with on The Vampire Diaries.
The Originals Characters
Klaus is the main character of this series, appearing in every episode and being both an antagonist and protagonist simultaneously. He is played by the dangerously good-looking Joseph Morgan, who lends an at-times mocking and vicious air to the character. Klaus loves his family. However, he fails to interact with them in ways that express his love. He even cares for a few humans and werewolves, including Hayley, but his controlling nature drives them away.
Rebekah is a strong vampire with a sentimental side played by Aussie actress Claire Holt. She is at constant odds with her brother Klaus though the two appear to have been the closest of the Mikaelson siblings in the past. Rebekah leaves New Orleans when things come to a violent head between her and Klaus. However, she is to return at the end of the first season to reconcile with Klaus and take his child into her care.
Elijah, portrayed by Daniel Gillies, is the wisest of the Mikaelsons. Clearly in love with Hayley and desperately trying to keep his family together, he is often in the midst of the action over the course of the show. The Originals gives Elijah new depth and a history in New Orleans that gets the vampires into trouble with the witches.
Marcellus took over New Orleans in Klaus’ absence and means to keep it. Head of a band of vampires that frequently antagonizes both Klaus and the witches, Marcellus is not one to keep out of trouble.
Hayley is werewolf royalty and the mother of Klaus Mikaelson’s child. She is also the love interest of Klaus’ brother Elijah.
Camille O’ Connell
Camille is a human whose uncle has kept up relations with the vampires and witches to protect the city. Both he and Camille’s brother suffer and die under a witch’s curse.
Davina Claire is the most powerful witch in New Orleans, thanks to a botched ritual performed by the witches. It is corrected, and she becomes an outcast among her kind.
