Glee is a comedy drama with a musical focus that airs on Fox. It has been on the air for five seasons and will begin airing its sixth and final season in the spring of 2015. This television show focuses on high school Spanish teacher Will Schuester’s goal to revive McKinley High School’s glee club and restore it to its former level of prominence within the Ohio school. As is the case with any high school drama or comedy, the road to restoration is not easy, and many rivals are made along the way.
The Premise of Glee
Will Schuester’s bid to revitalize the glee club, named “New Directions,” is met with resistance from the cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, played by Jane Lynch, who essentially becomes his arch nemesis. In true high school drama fashion, she tries various methods of sabotaging New Directions with varying levels of success. The students and teachers in this series all experience issues typical of high school dramas. Friendships and romances form, fall apart and then reform, all against the backdrop of striving to win Sectionals, Regionals and Nationals.
Schuester begins the series married to Terri, played by Jessalyn Gilsig, but that marriage eventually fails when he discovers that she has been lying about her non-existent pregnancy. After ending that marriage, he gets together with school counselor Emma Pillsbury, portrayed by Jayma Mays. Star quarterback Finn Hudson, played by Corey Monteith, joins New Directions in spite of the social fallout he knows will occur; he begins the series in a relationship with fellow club member Quinn Fabray, played by Dianna Agron, but eventually gets in a relationship with another talented fellow club member named Rachel Berry, portrayed by Lea Michele. Chris Colfer plays New Directions member Kurt Hummel, who eventually comes out as gay and later becomes engaged to Blaine Anderson, played by Darren Criss, first seen in the series as part of rival vocal ensemble Warblers. Resident diva Mercedes Jones, played by Amber Riley, briefly dates Chord Overstreet’s character Sam Evans, but her main focus has always been on her talent and career prospects. Tina Cohen-Chang, Artie Abrams, Santana Lopez, Brittany Pierc and Noah “Puck” Puckerman are all members of New Directions.
One popular aspect of Glee is the musical covers that New Directions members do of popular songs and show tunes. Sometimes the songs are choreographed numbers rehearsed for competition, and sometimes they align more with the plots of the characters’ lives. The singers have released several volumes of music from the series as well as multiple soundtrack albums filled with music covers. Glee has covered songs like “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones and “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. Fans can watch Glee online to see all of these famous covers as aired.
While much of this television series is comedy, the characters have to face some serious issues over the run of the show. Teen pregnancy, sexuality and religion come up as do ambition, pride and the general challenges of romantic relationships. Divorce, homophobia, bullying and even death are all addressed on the show, causing some characters to make difficult choices. One of the most challenging moments of the show was caused by the real-life death of star Corey Monteith, who played popular character Finn Hudson. Season five carried on, however, with a moving tribute to Monteith and a full slate of episodes.
Reviews for Glee have been largely positive. Most people find this series to be enjoyable, fun and full of great covers of some of their favorite songs. Critics cite the”vibrant musical numbers, the talented cast and the human feeling” of the characters for the enduring popularity of this series. The show’s passionate fans continue to support the show in multiple ways and are looking forward to the sixth and final season.
Season six will be the last season of Glee, so Gleeks may want to watch Glee online in order to catch up on all their favorite episodes before the spring of 2015. This final season will consist of only 13 episodes, which is the shortest season yet for this hit TV series. The regular cast is being reduced to nine people, and some other characters from previous seasons will reprise their roles on a more sporadic basis. Five new characters are going to be introduced in this final season, adding some new blood to this hit show.
